Earlier today, we reported that a "rapist list" penned by unknown authors was appearing in women's bathroom stall walls on Columbia University's campus. University acb custodians were erasing the lists almost as quickly as they appeared. But now, whoever is responsible has doubled the fuck down; instead of scribbling names on walls, they're handing out flyers.
The flyers list the names of four men that the authors say were found responsible for sexual assault yet allowed to remain on campus. For the sake of their privacy, we've blurred out the names, but the list includes a musician, a prominent writer for a campus publication, and a varsity athlete. The three whose enrollment at Columbia we were able to verify appear to be current students, according to their public social media accounts.
Our tipster also sent this image ostensibly taken in a women's rest room at Columbia, of a pile of undistributed flyers, each of which contains the four names and a warning for members of the Columbia acb community. Stay safe.
Fed up with their school's inadequate response to sexual assault on campus, an anonymous acb group of Columbia University students have taken matters into their own hands. But they're not relying on the court system to force the University acb to address the problem; they're posting so-called "rapist lists" in women's restrooms. And if they get caught, they could be in medium-to-large-size trouble.
According to the Columbia Lion, the lists began appearing last week in the women's bathroom on the fifth floor of Hamilton Hall. The original list contained four names of current Columbia undergraduate men, each written in a different color and in different handwriting. That list remained up for several hours before it was scrubbed by maintenance workers.
This acb week, a list of the same four names appeared again, this time all in the same handwriting, but written acb several times over in a different building's bathroom. This time, the list's author didn't refer to the names as the sanitized "Sexual Assault Violators," but rather the more succinct "RAPIST LIST." For a really, really, really bad time, call...
Students at Columbia University have long been critical of their school's lackluster response to sexual assault. Last month, a group of 23 Columbia acb and Barnard students filed a lawsuit against Columbia University, alleging that the school had violated both Title IX and the Clery Act by failing both to notify its students of sexual assault and to protect its students from perpetrators. The complaint alleges, among other things, that students were discouraged from reporting rapes, and that when they did, the perpetrators were given light slaps on the wrist and allowed to remain on campus.
This isn't the first time frustrated (or vengeful) college students have posted "rapist lists" in restrooms. In 1990, a list that grew to contain more than thirty names kept popping up around Brown University's campus, prompting an in-depth writeup from the New York Times on the growing and ever-more-visible problem of sexual assault on campus. The issue has been percolating not only at Brown but also at many other campuses in recent years as a growing number of women have pressed sexual assault charges. Contributing to the problem are dormitories that house both men and women, the lifting of curfews and relaxed attitudes about drinking, say , university officials and women here and elsewhere.
Moreover, statistics on rape and other crimes on this campus and others have been uneven and sometimes nonexistent, since there is often no single campus acb clearinghouse for gathering such data. Brown University officials told the student forum they did not know how many rapes had been committed on campus, but they have pledged to strengthen policies on sexual assault and harassment.
